Eukaryotes
Last unit we studied a Prokaryotic cell (Bacteria) and now we are ready to learn the structures in a Eukaryotic cell. While learning about the organelles inside a cell we will also learn about the levels of organization (cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organism). Learning about plant cells, tissues and organs will lead us into the next unit of plants & ecology.
Quizzes/ Test
2025: Cell Pop Quiz #2. 20 multiple choice questions. Includes all organelle structure and function (what they look like and what they do). Study the flashcards below next to Plant Cell and Animal Cell flashcards Quizlet.
Labs & Activities
Project: Cell Park Brochure: create a brochure to a Cell Attraction. Completed mostly in class.
Cell Structure Microviewer: looking at specialized cells in plants and animals.
Mitochondrial Disease: reading article that looks at the importance of the Mitochondria.
Cell Respiration Lab
Some years when time allows: A brief introduction on Viruses - homework assignment and an in class virus model.
Simulations
Taking a closer look at the cell membrane (demo only, it doesn't work on chromebooks).
Review the organelles of an animal and plant cell.
Resources/textbook information
CK-12 Cells. An online book with a great description of cells.
Plant cell information. Contains more than will be covered at the Middle School level.
A quick review simulation: build an animal cell and plant cell and complete a venn diagram
Old Flashcards: Bacteria Flashcards if you need to review the ribosomes, cell wall, cell membrane and cytoplasm. This unit assumes that you learned this information so reviewing it is a good idea!
Pop Quiz #1: Learn the organelles: nucleus, nucleolus, ER, ribosomes, chromosomes and cytoplasm
Quiz #2
Plant Cell flashcards. 15/20 questions on Pop Quiz #2 are in this set.
Animal Cell Flashcards. This set will help with your understanding for Quiz #2 with similar information in the plant cell flashcards. Also has 3 unique questions that are found on the quiz.
General Flashcards to help you learn the organelles of a cell.
Organization of Life flashcards that help you review for the unit test.
NGSS
MS-LS1-1. Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells.
MS-LS1-2. Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.
MS-LS1-3. Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells.
An introduction to LS1-3 is given in this unit, but we go into more detail 4th quarter.
